Ruth and Esther Tea Party at Government House

The Government House is the official residence and office of the Governor-General of Barbados.
It was built in the colonial days and was the residence of the Governor of Barbados.
It later continued in the role of official residence and office of the Governor-General following political independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. Government House was once a Quaker Plantation, until it was purchased by the Imperial Government.

Madame Justice Sandra Prunella Mason, QC


Madame Justice Dame Sandra Prunella Mason QC new Governor General of Barbados In 1978 -1992 she was the Magistrate of the Juvenile Court and Family Court and Magistrate, all other jurisdictions; October 1998-1991 appointed as Acting Chief Magistrate; 1991-1992 Magistrate, District ‘C’ Court, District ‘A’ Family Court, Barbados; Ambassador to Venezuela, Colombia, Chile and Brazil ( 1993-1994); Chief Magistrate (1994-1997); Registrar of the Supreme Court (1997-2005).

Sandra Prunella Mason was appointed to the Inner Bar of Barbados as a Queen’s Counsel by the Hon. Chief Justice of Barbados, Sir David Simmons in June, 2005.

In 2008 she was appointed the first female judge in the Barbados Court of Appeal.

On 1 January 2014 Justice Mason was first Barbadian to be appointed as a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal (CSAT), based in London, England. Justice Mason has held membership in various Organisations and Association and has chaired or was a member of a number of other Boards and Committees over the years. She was the Chairman of the West Indian Commission set up to look at the issue of regional integration (1991-1992); She has served as Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Pioneer of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (1991-1999), Geneva, Switzerland; Deputy Chairman Bridgetown District Council, Barbados Boys Scouts Association; member of the Board of Parent Education for Development of Barbados (PAREDOS).

Madame Justice Dame Sandra Prunella Mason QC new Governor General of Barbados Barbados Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced "I am pleased to announce that Her Majesty The Queen, on the recommendation of Her Majesty’s Ministers in Barbados, has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of The Honourable Sandra Prunella Mason, Justice of Appeal, as Governor-General of Barbados.

In keeping with tradition, Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to confer on The Honourable Sandra Prunella Mason, the honour and dignity of Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (GCMG). The Honourable Sandra Prunella Mason, on assumption of the office of Governor-General, will, under the Order of the Dame of Saint Andrew, become the Chancellor and Principal Dame of Saint Andrew. The installation ceremony for The Honourable Sandra Prunella Mason, will take place on Monday, January 8, 2018 in the Senate Chambers."
