Theme:The threat to the Hope of Christmas - the spirit of Herod
Text: Matthew 2:1-18

Review:
Micah 5:2-4
2”But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned
until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites.
4 He will stand and shepherd his flock
in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
5 And he will be our peace
when the Assyrians invade our land
and march through our fortresses.
We will raise against them seven shepherds,
even eight commanders,

Fulfilled Matthew 2:2
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod,

Jeremiah 31:15
15 This is what the Lord says:
“A voice is heard in Ramah,
mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”

Fulfilled Matthew 2:16-18
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”

The King of Kings has come
Matthew 2:1-2
1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
When the news reached the Palace it was war, the Jews believed that the Messiah would overthrow the ruling Roman government but His Kingdom had come in their hearts.

Herod had a plan to destroy the new Jesus
Matthew 2:3
3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

So he called his counselors the chief priest and teachers of the law
Matthew 2:4-6
4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Bethlehem the ‘House of Bread’ and the Bread of Life was born there
Herod would stop at nothing until he saw this new king dead.
Matthew 2: 7-8
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

Herod was out for blood but God had a plan

Matthew 2: 9-12
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

When Herod realized he had been tricked
Matthew 2: 16-18
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”

Just like Jesus was a target so are we, the devil wants to kill, steal and destroyed. The spider is Herod is still alive. But we look to our God who is a king. We have to gear up and be covered with the armor of God, using our weapons

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

Theme: Joseph and Mary
Text: Luke 2:1-7

2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
Joseph could never accept Mary’s story in his own strength. God had to send an angel to convince him.
Then Joseph was rejected in his own land. Despite the challenges and loss of hope and rejection and uncertainty still the Hope of Christmas still came forth, when the time came.
My purposes shall be fulfilled in my life once I am lined up with God, once I am obedient.
His Word stands firm. Be assured on the promises and the Word spoke over this Church and our lives.

Romans 8:19
19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.
Bethlehem was waiting to fulfill its destiny and by Mary and Joseph being obedient the town fulfilled its purpose and destiny.
In the face of despair and loss and decadence we can find a life in Christ and we can celebrate Christmas .
He can come as a great light, if God be with us we can look into 2021 with a Hope
